The name "Papyrus" comes from Exodus 2:3, when Moses's mother fashioned a basket of papyrus reeds to preserve her son's life. In desperation, she placed him in the basket and sent him down the perilous Nile river, where he eventually was received safely on the riverbank. This image of Moses in the basket captures the vision of Papyrus in two ways. One of these is that the basket served as a refuge to Moses through a tumultuous river full of dangers and death. Similarly, the present world we live in is broken, full of dangers, death, and evil, much like Nile. Yet, through Jesus, we can draw near to God and say throughout all of life, "God is our refuge and strength" (Psalm 46:1). Not only does Jesus give us abundant grace and hope in our present lives, but we have hope for the future. Just as Moses was received safely on shore, so shall those in Christ be received by Him when they pass from this life. This is the second half of the Papyrus image: we are transformed by the sure hope that one day, Jesus will put a complete, final end to all death, sorrow, evil, and pain. In our counseling, we aim to draw on the present grace lavished on us, and live in the hope of future renewal.
